Jason Bodlovich Quartet's Latest Jazz Release:
Jason Bodlovich has assembled an acoustic jazz quartet for his 2010 release, The Culprit. The Quartet features Noam Lemish on piano, Miles Wick on upright bass and James Stafford on drums. The Quartet expands to a quintet with Jason's mentor, Randy Vincent, stepping in on guitar for half the session. The album concludes with an intimate guitar duo setting with Bodlovich and Vincent. The Culprit features nine original compositions with eclectic jazz styles including straight ahead, Brazilian, gypsy swing and gospel.
"Bay Area six-stringer Jason Bodlovich traverses a wide range of styles on his sophomore release ["The Culprit"], from the soulful, gospel-tinged "Krumble" (played with urgent bent-string fervor on electric guitar), to the buoyant, Brazilian-flavored "Cotash" (played on nylon-string acoustic), to the swinging blues "B Flatted.". He shows a fondness for Wes-like octaves on the bossa-nova-flavored "SGB," and offers Django-esque filigrees on the title track. And he exchanges some hot licks with guest guitarist Randy Vincent on the duet closer, "B4Ugo," recalling the tight blues-based chemistry between Joe Pass and Herb Ellis.-Bill Milkowski, Jazztimes
"Even from the title, Hammerhead, one can ascertain that Jason Bodlovich's newest album is more forceful and driven than the average instrumental guitar release. Heavy percussion, funk grooves and technical precision underscore the album's role as a conjurer of images. "Grazin'", though not a country song, still conjures haystacks and wooden fences, while "10 Rays" is the sound of sunrise, as magisterial as it gets. When Bodlovich swipes his pick across the round-wound strings while picking out low notes on "Lumpy", it's just like skipping through sidewalk puddles. With Hammerhead, calling Bodlovich a jazz artist isn't enough anymore. He's on some other plane."
-Gabe Meline, North Bay Bohemian
"Jason Bodlovich is a powerhouse of a musician. On drums and guitar he possesses the kind of technique, heart and soul that makes everyone in the audience go "Wow!".
